Massage is one of the oldest therapeutic methods, bringing relief to tired muscles and helping to reduce stress. At Lumira SPA, we offer a wide variety of treatments – from relaxing Balinese massage, through intense Thai massage, to gentle aromatherapy massage. However, although massage is a natural method of regeneration, there are situations in which the treatment can be hazardous to health. Every client should be aware of the contraindications to massage before visiting the spa.
Our experience in running a professional spa shows that awareness of limitations is crucial for safe use of treatments. Properly identifying contraindications helps avoid adverse reactions and ensure maximum benefits from the therapy.
Absolute contraindications to massage include health conditions in which the treatment is strictly prohibited due to the serious risk of complications. In such cases, massage may not only fail to deliver the expected benefits but also significantly worsen the client’s health.
The first group includes acute inflammation, including a fever above 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit), which indicates an active disease process in the body. Massage in such a condition can accelerate circulation and exacerbate symptoms of infection, leading to further deterioration. Another absolute contraindication is recent injuries, such as fractures, dislocations, or extensive contusions, where mechanical impact can cause additional tissue damage. Open wounds, cuts, and skin damage also preclude massage due to the risk of infection.
Contraindications to therapeutic and relaxation massage include a number of conditions that require special attention from the therapist. Circulatory system conditions, such as uncontrolled hypertension, a recent heart attack, or cardiac arrhythmias, can seriously limit the use of classic massage techniques. The intense kneading and deep pressure characteristic of classic massage can cause dangerous changes in blood pressure and strain the heart. Advanced varicose veins also require caution, as mechanical impact on damaged vessels can lead to thrombotic complications. Contraindications to relaxing massage are usually less restrictive, but still include conditions in which even gentle techniques can be harmful. Pregnancy in the first trimester requires special caution – some acupressure points used in massage can trigger uterine contractions. Blood clotting disorders, the use of anticoagulants, and hemophilia are conditions in which even gentle massage can lead to the formation of subcutaneous hematomas.
Contraindications to spinal massage require a particularly thorough assessment, as this area of the body is extremely sensitive to mechanical impact. Acute disc herniation, spinal degeneration, or recent vertebral injuries are absolute contraindications to intensive massage in this area.
Clients also frequently ask: can spinal massage harm people with neurological problems? The answer is complex and depends on the specific diagnosis and the severity of the condition. Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, or neuropathy may be relative contraindications, requiring consultation with a physician and adjustment of the massage technique.
Spinal massage and pacemakers – this is a topic that often concerns our clients. The presence of a pacemaker is not necessarily a contraindication to massage, but it does require special precautions and consultation with a cardiologist. Modern pacemakers are usually resistant to external mechanical impacts, but there are certain areas that should be avoided during massage. It is also important to inform the massage therapist about the type of implanted device and any medical recommendations.
Besides the strict limitations, there are situations in which massage can be performed, but requires modification of technique or special caution. This group includes:
